Transportable Construction - Education Facility

Mid North Coast CC Intensive Learning Centre

The Intensive Learning Centre (ILC) project was a collaborative project between Corrective Services NSW and the Designing Out Crime Research Centre (DOC) at UTS.

Intensive Learning Centres (ILC) provide inmates with opportunities for 3-6 months of concentrated learning. The Centre target inmates with low Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills with the aim of developing basic, vocational and employability skills linked to employment options.

Learning takes place in a therapeutic community environment which encourages flexible delivery, collaboration, team work, explorative enquiry and problem-solving. ILC design elements and ILC teacher methods are mutually reinforcing. The aim is to improve rehabilitation outcomes and reduce risk of re-offending.

Acknowledgment

The design of the Intensive Learning Centre was a collaboration between prisoners, CSNSW staff, and UTS Designing Out Crime.

The Intensive Learning Centre was installed in the grounds of Mid North Coast Correctional Centre - on Dunghutti Land in 2013.

It was constructed by Aboriginal prisoners in the Gundi Program at St Hiliers Correctional Center as part of their trade skills learning in the Affordable Housing Unit.

The project was generously supported by the Corrective Services NSW senior management.
