This client concern that generated this project was the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in prison and the loss of connection with Country. The aim was to design for acknowledgment of the land that the Women were on and through this, mend connection with their own Country.
The research included meeting with Aboriginal Women in prison to hear their concerns for how they relate to where they are and where they are from. Through conversation, one thing that all could could connect with was the presence of Dinawan in all of the cultures represented. This formed the basis for connecting across Country to home whilst collecting reeds from the local river and making woven structures centred the meaning of Country for where they are.
The images indicate the research in the design.
It should be noted that this project was taken over by CSNSW project management. The design team has never had the opportunity to see if the vision that was co-created came to be. We hope it did.
Project on the land of the Darug people and Gandangara people
The Women noted the Emu, Dinewan as a common cultural reference across Aboriginal Groups. Across cultures, Dinewan indicates changes in seasons through the year as it moves through the sky.
The purpose of drawing Country was to make connection with people and culture, and their situation of time away from community through applying to the finishes at Emu Plains Correctional Centre. The intention was to assist with maintaining connection with culture.
