Modular housing for Aboriginal Housing Office

This house was designed through a research-creation process with Corrective Services New South Wales Affordable Housing Unit and the Aboriginal Housing Office. It included fieldwork consultation with western NSW communities to determine needs and perspectives on appropriate housing. 

Constructed by Corrective Services Industries Gundi Program, the house was design so it:

  • is flexible to the needs of the client - client can design the house
  • is responsive to any site
  • has an an remote urban aesthetic
  • can be adjusted to the needs of the client over time
  • has standardised construction
  • offers a certainty of construction delivery
  • mepoys a simple design that offers opportunity for Indigenous people to develop construction skills

Acknowledgment

This house was placed on Kamilaroi Land. 

It was constructed by Aboriginal prisoners in the Gundi Program at St Hiliers Correctional Centre as part of their trade skills learning in the Affordable Housing Unit. 

The project was generously supported by the Aboriginal Housing Office. 


The 'Podular' won its category in the 2023 Premier's Awards - Building a Resilient Community.
